Check Safety First

Before we dive in, let’s talk safety. If you smell gas, hear hissing, or suspect a leak, stop everything, turn your boiler off, open windows, and call the National Gas Emergency Service at 0800 111 999. Don’t try to investigate yourself.

But if it’s just a case of no heat and no flame? Let’s keep going.

Why Isn’t My Boiler Firing Up?

There are a few usual suspects when it comes to a boiler not firing up. Sometimes it’s something small you can sort yourself, and other times it’s a bit more technical and needs a qualified engineer (that’s where we come in).

Here are the most common reasons we see when a boiler decides not to play ball:

1. No Power to the Boiler

Yes, it sounds basic, but we’ve all been there. Maybe the switch has tripped, maybe there’s been a power cut, or maybe a fuse has blown.

What to check:

  • Is the boiler switched on?
  • Is the display showing anything?
  • Are the lights or sockets in that room working?

If you’re not seeing anything on the display, it could also point to a faulty circuit board. That’s not something to tackle alone, but we can handle it swiftly.

2. Pressure Problems

Low pressure is a common reason your boiler won’t fire up. You can usually see this on the pressure gauge, most boilers should sit somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar when cool.

If it’s too low, your boiler might not even try to ignite.

You could try topping it up via the filling loop if you’re comfortable, but if the pressure keeps dropping, there’s likely a bigger issue.

What we do: We’ll check for leaks, inspect the expansion vessel, and fix or replace pressure valves if needed. You won’t have to guess, we’ll explain everything as we go.

3. Frozen Condensate Pipe

If it’s chilly out, this might be the problem. Condensate pipes (usually leading outside) can freeze and stop your boiler from working altogether. Modern boilers will shut down as a safety precaution.

What you can try:

  • Pour warm water (not boiling!) over the pipe
  • Gently thaw it if it’s within reach
  • Reset the boiler after it’s defrosted

Still not working? We’ll not only thaw it safely, we’ll also insulate it properly to help prevent this from happening again.

4. Ignition Trouble or Pilot Light Out

On older boilers, a pilot light that’s gone out will stop the whole system. With newer models, ignition issues are more common.

This could be caused by:

  • A faulty thermocouple
  • Problems with the gas supply
  • Blocked flues or dirty ignition leads

You shouldn’t have to guess. If you’re seeing the boiler try (and fail) to ignite, or hearing clicking but nothing follows, it’s time to give us a call.

We’ll check everything, from spark electrodes to gas flow, and get your boiler safely back in action.

5. Gas Supply Issue

No gas = no flame. Sometimes it’s that simple. It could be a supply problem in your area, or it could be a faulty gas valve in your boiler.

Quick tip: If your gas cooker or hob isn’t working either, it could be an issue with your supplier.

If it’s just the boiler, we’ll test the valve, the control board, and make sure gas is reaching the burner as it should. And yes, we’re fully Gas Safe registered, so you’re in safe hands.

6. Thermostat Settings Gone Wrong

Don’t overlook the thermostat, it plays a big role in telling the boiler when to fire up.

Double-check:

  • Batteries (if it’s wireless)
  • Time and temperature settings
  • Wi-Fi connection (for smart thermostats)

If it’s not talking to your boiler properly, we can recalibrate or replace it with a more efficient one. And yes, we’ll show you how to use it properly before we leave.

7. Sludge or Air in the System

Over time, your central heating system can collect air or sludge, especially if it’s not been serviced regularly. This stops water from circulating and can cause the boiler to shut down or behave erratically.

Signs include:

  • Banging or gurgling noises
  • Radiators not heating evenly
  • Boiler firing then cutting out

We offer power flushing and deep system cleans to get everything flowing smoothly again. It’s like a reset for your entire heating system.

Tried Everything and Still Stuck?

If your boiler still isn’t firing up after basic checks, don’t keep pushing that reset button. You could make things worse or trigger a full lockout.
