Energy Bills Rising in October 2026: Is Your Boiler Wasting Energy?
If your heating bills already feel higher than they should, October is a good time to take a closer look at your boiler and central heating system. From 1 October 2026, the energy price cap for households on default tariffs is increasing by 4%, making even small amounts of avoidable gas consumption more noticeable on your household heating costs.
That does not mean your boiler is automatically to blame.
Your home’s size, insulation, heating habits, controls and energy tariff all affect what you pay. But if your boiler is old, poorly maintained, or not working efficiently, let me tell you this: it could be using more gas than your home needs.
So, is your boiler wasting energy? More importantly, what can you realistically do about it?

What the October 2026 Energy Price Cap Means for Homeowners
The October 2026 price cap applies from 1 October to 31 December 2026. For a typical household paying by Direct Debit on a default tariff, Ofgem has set an annualised figure of £1,723 for gas and electricity combined.
This is an illustrative figure based on typical consumption, not a maximum amount an individual household can be charged.
For gas, the average capped unit rate for Direct Debit customers from October is 7.97p per kWh, compared with 7.33p during July to September. That makes reducing unnecessary gas consumption worthwhile, particularly as colder weather increases demand for heating.
So what role does your home’s boiler play?
Yes, you cannot control the wholesale cost of gas; but you can look at how effectively your heating system uses the gas you pay for.
Could Your Boiler Be Wasting Energy?
A boiler does not operate in isolation.
When looking at whether a boiler is wasting energy, it is worth considering the appliance, heating controls and wider central heating system together rather than judging efficiency from the boiler alone.
Imagine two similar houses with boilers of roughly the same age. One has a sensible heating schedule, working thermostatic radiator valves and a well-maintained system. The other heats empty rooms for much of the day and has radiators affected by poor circulation. Their gas consumption could be quite different.
That is why a high energy bill alone is not proof that your boiler is inefficient. However, a noticeable change in heating performance, recurring faults or an ageing appliance can be a good reason to have the system checked.
How Boiler Age Affects Energy Efficiency
Older boilers are not automatically inefficient, particularly if they have been properly maintained. However, technology has changed considerably over the years.
- Modern condensing boilers are designed to recover additional heat from the combustion process that would otherwise be lost through the flue. They can also work with more sophisticated controls and, when correctly sized and installed, modulate their output to match the heating demand more effectively.
This does not mean that replacing an old boiler will automatically halve your heating bills. The potential improvement depends on what you currently have, how much gas you use, and the condition of the rest of your heating system.
An older boiler may still heat your home reliably, but if you notice higher gas consumption alongside repeated repairs or inconsistent heating, it is worth investigating whether your boiler is wasting energy.
Signs Your Boiler May Be Running Inefficiently
Your heating system can give you clues that something is not quite right.
Perhaps the house takes much longer to warm than it used to. Maybe some radiators are cold at the top or bottom, the boiler repeatedly switches on and off, hot water performance has changed, or you are hearing unusual noises.
Repeated pressure problems and frequent breakdowns are also worth investigating. So is a noticeable increase in gas consumption when your household routine has not changed.
If your energy use has increased without a clear change in household routines, it’s useful to start checking for signs of a boiler wasting energy before assuming that the higher cost is entirely down to energy prices.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean the boiler itself is at fault.
- A noisy heating system, for example, could have an issue elsewhere in the central heating circuit.
- Poor circulation, sludge, trapped air, or unsuitable system settings can all affect performance.
That is why diagnosis matters. Rather than assuming your boiler is wasting energy and immediately replacing it, a qualified heating engineer can investigate the system as a whole.
How Heating Controls Can Affect Energy Use
- Your thermostat determines the target room temperature.
- Programmers and timers control when the heating operates.
- Thermostatic radiator valves can then help regulate individual rooms.
If your heating is running while the house is empty, or every room is being heated when only one or two are occupied, you may be using more energy than necessary.
There is also a common misconception that turning the thermostat much higher will heat the house faster. It does not. The boiler and heating system still have their available output; setting the thermostat higher simply gives the system a higher target temperature.
Modern smart heating controls can make scheduling easier and give homeowners more control over when and where heating is used. They are not, however, automatically the right choice for every property. Compatibility with the existing boiler and heating system should still be considered before installation.

How Can You Reduce Your Boiler’s Energy Use?
Before spending thousands of pounds on a replacement boiler, look at the simpler possibilities.
You may find that a change to your heating schedule, a service or a problem with the wider central heating system addresses the issue. In other homes, particularly those with an ageing boiler and recurring repairs, replacement may eventually be the more practical route.
The important thing is to work out which situation applies to your home.
Improve Your Heating Controls and Settings
Start with how your heating is being used.
Look at when the heating comes on, when it switches off, and whether your current schedule still reflects your household’s routine. If your working patterns or occupancy have changed, an old heating programme may no longer make sense.
Check that your thermostat and radiator controls are being used appropriately, too. Rooms that are rarely occupied may not need to be heated in exactly the same way as living areas.
If your controls are particularly old, upgrading them could improve the way you manage your heating without replacing the boiler itself. The right option depends on your existing system, so compatibility should be checked before buying new controls.
Keep Your Boiler and Central Heating System Well Maintained
Regular maintenance is another part of keeping a heating system operating properly.
A boiler service allows a suitably qualified engineer to inspect the appliance and check its operation. It can also identify developing problems before they become more disruptive. The wider central heating system deserves attention as well. Radiators that are not heating evenly, persistent pressure problems, poor circulation, or sludge within the system can all affect performance.
In some cases, remedial work such as system cleaning or power flushing may be appropriate. In others, a straightforward repair or adjustment may be all that is required.
For gas appliances, only an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer can carry out repairs and installations.
Check Your Boiler Before Higher Energy Bills Arrive with Rowlen
Higher energy prices are outside your control. How efficiently your home uses the energy you buy is not.
If you are concerned about a boiler wasting energy before the colder months arrive, our team can assess the appliance and wider heating system and explain whether servicing, repair, improved controls or replacement is the more appropriate route.
At Rowlen, we’ve been proud to serve generations of families across London, Kent, and Surrey for over five decades. Our team provides boiler servicing, repairs and installation, with Gas Safe registered engineers bringing practical experience to each job.
If you are unsure whether your existing boiler is working as efficiently as it should, we can assess your heating system and talk you through the options. Sometimes the answer is a simple adjustment or repair. Sometimes a new boiler is the sensible long-term investment.
The important thing is knowing which one your home actually needs.
