For many years boilers have been created in such a way that if there is a fault or error with the system, a code will be given so that you or a qualified boiler technician will be able to quickly diagnose the error. This is usually in the form of an alphanumerical code composed of both numbers and letters. There are hundreds of different things that can go wrong with a boiler, so having a definite code displayed gives an excellent indication as to the problem.
Vaillant are one of the top names in the world of boilers, and the systems they manufacture are very efficient and last many years before they can begin to encounter problems. However, from time to time your system may experience a fault that needs to be taken care of to keep your boiler working as intended.
In this article we’ll examine what the F62 error code on a Vaillant boiler means, and the steps you can take to resolve it.
What Is The F62 Vaillant Boiler Error Code?
If your boiler is displaying the F62 fault code, also shown as F.62 in some models, it means that there is an issue with your gas valve. Due to this issue being quite severe, the boiler is likely to lockout. The gas valve is an integral part of your boiler system, and it works to control how much gas is let into the boiler to be ignited. This happens every time you turn on the hot water tap or set the thermostat to a higher temperature than it is currently.
Some error and fault codes for Vaillant boilers can mean multiple things, however with the F62 code in particular it can only mean one thing, that the gas valve is at fault. This in itself can be due to several issues, such as a part which has worn down over time, or it could be clogged and needs cleaning. The PCB could also be at fault, and it may be sending the wrong signals to close/open, meaning gas can flow when it’s not supposed to, and prevented when it is supposed to be flowing.
The gas valve should always be closed when you are not using any heating or hot water, but as soon as you do the valve opens and allows water to be heated. If the valve is open when it shouldn’t be, then it is possible that gas can leak into your property, a dangerous situation that needs immediate remedy. The valve could also be closed shut and not opening properly when it is required.
Due to the seriousness of the F62 fault code and the potential for a gas leak, your boiler system should automatically lockout, which means your boiler won’t turn on at all, instead displaying the F62 error code on the screen. If your heating or hot water is not working properly and you check your boiler and see this error code, you should attempt to shut off your gas supply straight away and then call a Gas Safe boiler engineer to attend the property.
Do not attempt to gain access to the boiler yourself in this situation, and if you smell gas in the property and cannot find the gas shut off valve in your property, it would be wise to wait outside away from the house until the engineer arrives. If you tell them that you can smell gas, it’s likely they will prioritise your situation and attend as soon as they’re able to.
How Is An F62 Error Code Resolved?
Only a qualified boiler repair technician should attempt to resolve the F62 fault code for a Vaillant boiler, as the boiler needs to be taken apart and the gas valve located. If the valve was clogged, then a quick clean or valve replacement may be the best solution to get the boiler back in good working order.
If the electronic element of the valve is the issue, that can take quite a while to fix and sometimes a full PCB replacement may be needed so that it can communicate effectively with the gas valve. One possible reason that electronics get damaged is water leaking from the boiler, so if your boiler engineer suspects this they will do extra checks for leaks.
